For the food & beverage spaces at Chicago’s Hoxton hotel in the Fulton Market District, AvroKO has created a narrative weaving together the richness and warmth of the American Crafts movement, the celebratory spirit of 1930’s post-prohibition Chicago, and the eccentric vision of Edgar Miller, a Chicago artist who flouted formal education to create his own learning laboratory through his work.

At the turn of the century, Chicago had a unique role in the American Crafts movements, due to its history as a center for production and invention. It both nurtured craftsmanship and turned boldly toward the latest inventions in industry to create a unique merging of the hand and the machine. The 1930s, after the repeal of prohibition, is the era in which Chicagoans were freed from the dingy and secretive “blind pigs” of prohibition, and could return to bolder, more imaginative social spaces. The repeal of prohibition flooded the city’s restaurants and bars with more capital, and therefore more money to be spent on decorative elements in restaurants and bars. The designs were imaginative and playful, drawing inspiration from Europe and American’s grandest spaces. In this same decade, Edgar Miller discovered opportunities to pursue his eclectic artistry at various establishments around the city, and used his own home and studio to playfully work and experiment in ceramics, glass, fabric and wood.

A collection of f&b ranging from informal, casual bars to expansive rooftop terraces with a hidden speakeasy in the basement, make The Hoxton a standout in this historically industrial neighborhood. Playing off of its industrial character, the design embraces the idea of openness for the community.

Lazybird

Lazybird is a post-prohibition hideaway that draws guests in with smooth jazz and crafted cocktails and keeps them coming back for the cozy, underground vibe.

Tucked in the basement of The Hoxton, guests open the doors to reveal a jazz club that embraces the cozy, moody vibes of an underground lounge. The night starts early with long lines to get in to try the bespoke cocktails and find their favorite bird sculpture on the shelves behind the banquettes. Rusty reds and powdery blues bring a deep, moody vibe to the space, inviting guests to linger into the long hours of the night.

British Ethos with a Chicago Soul

The ground floor is designed as a dynamic space where energy flows across the restaurant and lounge, with the L train as a backdrop outside, adding to the space's vibrancy. Diverse, open and colorful nooks offer guests different experiences from fireside lounges to communal tables, all within a refined industrial shell.

Greenhouse on the Roof

With its commanding views of the Chicago skyline, this venue spans the entire footprint of the building’s rooftop, including a bar, pool deck and outdoor lounges. Inspired by Peruvian cuisine, Cabra is The Hoxton’s casual, buzzy ceviche restaurant by renowned Chef Stephanie Izard, offering a rooftop destination that can be used for all seasons.

Large garage doors on either end of the space allow the venue to extend outdoors during the warmer months or be closed off for a winter rooftop feeling.
